Hide nofollow links
2009-08-11
Due to a Google's algorithm change made in 2008, the popular "PageRank sculpting" has some negative effects now. Linking with rel="nofollow" tag decreases a so called "link juice", which is being distributed among all the links within a webpage. Blogs, discussion forums and other sites that allow users to leave their links (even when they are nofollowed) also might reduce "link juice" and as result - you rankings in Google. To solve this issue we present you the way of linking which is ignored by the search engine robots, including Google but still allows users to visit linked websites.
Let’s remind first, what rel="nofollow" tag really is meant for. The attribute was a response to a development of blogging era and problems related to comments posted on blogs, it was used for the first time in 2005. It turned out that some people posted comments to blog entries only to receive a valuable and thematically related links to their website, free of charge.
Blog owners lost a lot: firstly, they gave some power of their websites to the sites linked in comments and in return received lots of worthless spam, including the worst of all, sent by automatic programmes, promoting typically spammy websites.
Therefore, the attribute nofollow was suppose to be a kind of an antidote for this type of activity. However, in 2008 Google modified nofollow tag in the way, that the link with this parameter receives the same amount of ”Page Rank power" as ordinary link, but it is not being crawled by bots, meaning loss of "link juice" for the remaining links.
The exact description of changes was written by Matts Cutts, who is the head of Google’s Webspam team.
The side effect of the introduced changes is that the more links you have on your site (no matter if they're nofollowed or not) the less "link juice" is distributed among them. As a result the best option would be to remove any unnecessary links.
The chart below explains why the change in nofollow parameter causes damage to the websites owners:
Right now webmasters have to "pay" (in PageRank) for any link that is placed on their sites.
For those who do not want to weaken their website and at the same time they want to have a possibility of placing unburdened links on their website, we have prepared a simple solution, which may help.
Below are the plugins and moduls for some popular scripts, that change all the links within websites with attribute rel="nofollow" into links coded with JavaScript.
The types of applications we prepared HideNofollowLinks plugins for, are the following:
| WordPress | Download .zip |
| Joomla |
Download .zip |
| phpbb3 | Download .zip |
See html code:
This PHP code should be placed in the beginning of any other CMS or script.
The intention of these scripts is to avoid the loss of PageRank on external links placed in comments on blogs or forums. Real users can however still see and click those links.
This script finds all the nofollowed links and encodes them with a simple JavaScript function making them uncrawlable to search engines robots.
